On March 15, 1990, one week after the arrest of the Menendez Brothers, Hard Copy featured the interview I conducted with Erik Menendez for the Miami Herald.
I spoke with Erik in late October 1989, two months after the murders and five months before he was arrested. The brothers were not suspects publicly and I had no reason to be suspicious of them
Over three hours, Erik told me loving stories about his “close-knit” family. He became emotional when talking about the night he and Lyle discovered their parents’ bodies. Erik told me he wished he knew who was responsible for killing Jose and Kitty Menendez.
The Beverly Hills Police had the same wish for seven months until Judalon Smyth, the paramour of the brothers’ therapist, walked in and cracked the case.
