Robert Rand’s original assignment from the Miami Herald seemed straightforward: a rags-to-riches story memorializing the life of Jose Menendez, a Cuban immigrant who clawed his way up the corporate ladder and earned millions. Menendez had been planning a second act of sorts—a cross-country move to Miami where he planned a grand entree into the political scene. But his life ended before those dreams were realized.

On August 20th, 1989 he and his wife Kitty were gunned down in a barrage of buckshot in their Beverly Hills mansion. Rand’s working headline was “Who Killed the Next U.S. Senator from Florida?”
